Caring for your smile is important, no matter how busy you are, and especially during this hectic time of year. Keep your smile healthy by giving it the attention it needs to thrive. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, flossing is “an important oral hygiene practice.”

To floss, you have a variety of options at your disposal. Most common are dental floss/tape, and interdental cleaners. These may include water flossers, small brushes, wooden or plastic picks specifically designed for flossing, and pre-threaded flossers. Your toothbrush can’t clean oral debris so investing in the flosser of your choice will keep your smile free from plaque.

If plaque is allowed to harden, it will form into a hard mineral deposit that will need to be removed professionally by your dentist. As tartar builds up on the teeth, you will find it more difficult to brush and clean between your teeth. Additionally, your gum tissue may become swollen, and bleed. This is the early stage of gum disease, also called gingivitis.

Find an Interdental cleaner that you are comfortable with and use it between the hard-to-reach tooth surfaces. In so doing, you will help to prevent gum disease and tooth decay.
